About Us
The Wine Shed, based in Wiveliscombe, Somerset on the edge of Exmoor National Park and only 11 miles from Taunton and junction 25 of the M5 motorway, was established in November 2007 to provide a new, fresh and exciting little place to discover not only unique and specialist wines but also every day drinking wines. Our aim is to seek out small, quality conscious wine producers who have either turned their back on the large UK supermarket giants or are simply too small to be snapped up by the big boys.
Occasionally we might stray from this ethos if we think the wine deserves a place on a restaurant’s wine list and on our shelf in The Wine Shed.
Our criteria for selecting the wines we sell is a simple one – would we drink it?
So you will find some famous names like Bollinger Champagne, Yalumba, Australia’s Oldest Family owned wine company and top Barossa producer as well as Hidalgo’s specialist sherry. The reason is simple – we love their work and are happy to support them.
The vast majority of what we seek out is an attempt to bring some interest and excitement to your table and get away from the bland, dull offering of the big wine brands chasing the holy grail of volume over value.
We want to understand who we are buying from, what their credentials are in the way they farm their land and produce their wine and to support the little guys where we can, who care passionately about what they produce and the environment in which they grow their grapes.
We import a fantastic range of Organic wines from the Marche region of Italy as well as stocking a good selection of other organic and biodynamic wine producers.
We want to have reputation for being a great little place to discover something – a new wine, a new grape variety never drunk before, a new region never given a second glance. We want to be able to offer good advice on what food a wine goes well with in an unpretentious way and offer great service to our customers and have a bit of a giggle at the same time. We want to un stuff the stuffiness that is often associated with the subject of wine, open bottles at our regular wine tastings and help you discover new tastes and flavours.
